Dish Network Buys Out Bankrupt Blockbuster

By Rick Hodge, Attorney at Law April 06, 2011

With nearly one-third of the stores preparing to close by mid-April, Blockbuster, the infamous video rental store, has officially been bought out.  After the final adjustments, Dish Network won the video company, who filed for bankruptcy not too long ago, in an auction for $228 million.

Dish Network, according to sources, beat out two other bidders during the bankruptcy auction.  As of now, Blockbuster has 2,400 stores open, but this will not last long.  As mentioned earlier, 700 of the stores have been chosen to close by midmonth.

Blockbuster, before filing for bankruptcy, had 9,100 stores remaining open less than seven short years ago.

Dish representatives noted that the company plans to use this highly recognizable corporate giant to complement their "existing video offerings while presenting cross-marketing and services extension opportunities for Dish Network."

Dish Network plans to give Blockbuster a second chance at life as they assist their efforts to get out of bankruptcy by using the company itself to rebuild their reputation as the leader in video entertainment.
